U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated average of 155 house fires per year that began with Christmas tree fires from 2018-2022, causing injuries and about $14 million in direct property damage annually. This is according to the National Fire Protection Association. Follow these tips to keep your family, home, pets, and belongings safe this holiday season.
HOLIDAY FIRES
Keep these holiday safety tips in mind:
- Never leave a room with a burning candle. Candle fires are four times more likely during the holidays.
- Never burn wrapping paper, garbage, or debris in a fireplace.
- Supervise children around fireplaces, stoves, and open flames.
- Inspect space heaters before use. If damaged, don’t use. Plug them directly into the wall, not a surge protector.
CHRISTMAS TREE FIRE SAFETY
- Use fire-resistant artificial trees.
- Ensure live trees are fresh; needles should pull back easily and not break. If a tree sheds many needles when tapped, it’s not fresh.
- Keep trees watered to prevent drying and fire risk.
- Keep trees away from fireplaces and open flames.
- Do not place real, burning candles on trees. Keep lit candles three feet away.
- Ensure trees don’t block doorways or exits.
- Check Christmas light strands for damage before use. Never use more than three sets per extension cord.
- Inspect extension cords for damage and avoid overloading outlets.
- Turn off lights when away and unplug non-essential electronics.
- Use only non-combustible, flame-resistant decorations.
