Election Day was November 7th this year. Here are some interesting facts about Election Day.
First, it is a day for federal election of public officials. Local and state elections chose to use the same date for their elections because it was convenient and hence produced a greater turn out of voters. This was also a great way to save money by sharing resources including ballots, staffing and use of venues for voting booths.
A set Election Day was needed to avoid having results from one state affect the voting behavior of another state that had elections later. The day was set on a Tuesday to allow people to attend church on Sunday, travel to the polling place if needed on Monday, vote on Tuesday, and return home in time to have their products at the market to sell at the end of the week. November was chosen as the month after planting season but before bad weather prevented travel. It was the Tuesday after the first Monday because merchants needed the first day of each month to tally their sales from the previous month. This was determined in 1845, but the election of all federal offices was not set to this date until 1876 and the popular election of senators was not ratified until 1913. Even so, the logic behind setting the date on the Tuesday after the first Monday held until this day.
On a non-political level, people in our society are encouraged to vote with their dollars. This means that where you spend your money is a statement of who you support in business. If you agree with a company's business practices and policies, you should support them to promote that business model in your community. The reverse is also true meaning you should not make purchases from a company that has practices and policies that you feel do not benefit your community.
