As many of you may know, northern Iowa and southern Minnesota received a large amount of rainfall this past weekend. This heavy rain has now left a handful of towns with water damage and flooding issues. Mason City was hit especially hard, which took quite a heavy blow. Upon hearing about this, ServiceMaster By Rice quickly loaded up some of our vehicles and headed up north to help our fellow Iowans in Mason City.
How Bad Is It?
If you have ever been to Mason City, you might be familiar with the beautiful Clear Lake just west of the city. The large body of water nearby has made Mason City prone to flooding ever since the town was established. According to interviews with residents by the Global Gazette, people have been experiencing anywhere from 4-8 inches of stagnant water in their basement. ServiceMaster By Rice and other cleanup crews have been working diligently to remove water and remediate homes.
More rain is expected to come down in Mason City in the next couple of days. We recommend that if you have tangible goods which you want to keep safe, they need to be moved to the highest level of the house. Items in the basement are guaranteed to suffer more flooding damage if your home has already been affected.

Depending on where you live in Iowa, the odds of having your home struck with flood damage or backed-up water can be very high. The Iowa Flood Center in partnership with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has created a map that analyzes flood risk zones throughout the entire state. It’s also worth noting that the closer you live to a body of water like a lake, river, or even a creek; the higher the chances are that heavy rainfall can affect your home.
