About Lewiston, ID
Known for its proximity to Hells Canyon and named for Meriweather Lewis, Lewiston is the second-largest city in Northern Idaho. Our city was founded in 1861 following a nearby gold rush in Pierce. By 1863, Lewiston had become the capital of the Idaho Territory, but the government seat was moved to Boise soon after in 1864. It wasn’t until 1890 that Idaho achieved statehood. When The Orchards was annexed in 1969, Lewiston nearly doubled in size in population and area, and the population has grown to be 34,203 as of 2020.
