About Canoga Park
Canoga Park is nestled snugly in the San Fernando Valley – a region just outside Los Angeles. The area was a rancho before the Mexican-American War. In the aftermath of the war, the rancho transformed into wheat farms. During the 20th century, the area was further subdivided and then officially named Owensmouth in 1912. It joined Los Angeles in 1917 and was renamed Canoga Park in 1931.
Today, Canoga Park borders West Hills (to the west), Chatsworth (to the north), Woodland Hills (to the south), and Winnetka (to the east). Given its Mediterranean climate and topography, it usually enjoys temperate winters with increasingly warm summers.
Rocketdyne built its main manufacturing facility in Canoga Park in 1955. This arrival became a central employer for families in the area, along with the Atomics International and Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL). As of 2012, the median yearly household income was $51,601. There are approximately 2,835 businesses/independent contractors and 160 nonprofit organizations in the city.
