What to Do After a Kitchen Fire

Thanksgiving is the leading day of the year for U.S. home cooking fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

Even small kitchen fires can have unforeseen consequences if not properly cleaned. Fire damage should be handled by professionals who have the tools, processes and experience to restore kitchens safely, quickly and effectively.

That being said, there are steps homeowners can take to clean up safely after a kitchen fire:

  • Wear gloves, masks, pants, long sleeves and boots when entering a damaged area.
  • Avoid eating or drinking around hazardous materials.
  • Open windows to ventilate the area and let smoke and odors escape.
  • Remove salvageable, valuable and meaningful items first and throw out debris.
  • Remove kitchen cabinets and drawers to access the interior space.
  • Wipe down stainless steel appliances and other metallic surfaces.
  • Clean plastic and painted surfaces using an alkaline (soap-free) detergent.
  • Change your air filters.
  • If sprinklers went off during the fire, water damage mitigation will also be needed to prevent mold.
