Driving in winter weather can be challenging. It is important to know that snow and ice require you to take extra precaution with your vehicle. Safety is the number one priority. Here are a few things you can do to prepare yourself and your car for winter weather.
Get Your Vehicle Ready
Make sure your car is in good shape by having regular tune-ups and maintenance performed. Pay extra attention to your tires, battery, and windshield wipers which can all be affected by cold weather. Warm your car up before driving in cold weather. Make sure that your scrape any frost or ice off of the windshield and back before heading out so that your vision is never affected.
Be Prepared
There are many ways you can be prepared to drive in bad weather. First, increase your following distance in case you need to stop suddenly. Next, be sure that you keep emergency supplies in your car in the winter such as blankets, flashlights, jumper cables, first aid kit, and nonperishable snacks/water. You can make a kit and keep it in your trunk.
Be Aware of the Weather
Stay on top of the forecast when winter weather hits. If you can, avoid driving altogether. If you already have plans to go somewhere monitor conditions on your local news channel.
