Hitting the pool is a great, fun way to cool off during warm days. However, pools can cause serious risks and dangers when rules are not followed. Here are four pool safety rules you need to follow this summer so that you and your loved ones are sure to have a safe, fun-filled season.
Keep Young Children Within Your Reach
Drowning can occur in as little as ten seconds, so keep small children in arms reach at all times. Be alert and available at all times. It is easy to get distracted when you are having fun. Even if you are at a pool with lifeguards, or your children are older keep your attention focused on the pool to ensure that your child is happy and safe.
Install a Fence In Private Pools
Make sure that you have a secure fence, with a gate that locks installed around your pool to prevent an accident. Never allow children to play around a pool alone. If you have doors that enter directly onto a pool deck, install a door alarm to alert you if a little one enters the pool deck alone.
Don’t Swim Alone
Even strong swimmers can face an emergency. It is best to never swim alone. If something unexpected should occur such as a cramp or heart attack, you may not be able to get out of the pool safely. Be sure someone else is around and knows where you are.
Make Sure Swimmers Are Prepared
All children should be taught how to properly swim at a young age, especially if you have a pool at home. Investing in swimming lessons with a professional will ensure your children are taught proper pool safety. Also, keep a first-aid kit and CPR instructions at private pools. Have emergency numbers and a phone close to the pool to call for help should you need to.
