Who doesn’t love the beginning of fall? The cool crisp air, the leaves changing colors, roasting s’mores, haystacks, and the smoky smell of outdoor fires. Fall is a wonderful time of the year that many look forward to. Outdoor fire pits are a great way to bring people together during the fall. Whether you have a fire pit in your yard or are planning to buy one, it is important to know the safety of owning a back yard fire pit.
First, you need to make sure the location of your fire pit is correct. Fire pits need to be in an area where the ground is level. It is ideal that they are placed on concrete, stone, or brick. Your fire pit needs to be at least 10 feet away from your home, trees, plants, or fences nearby.
Do not use your fire pit when it is windy outside. Wind can cause embers to blow which can be dangerous. It is important to also stay updated on any burn ordinances that may be in your area during the year. Always use clean, dry, untreated wood, cut six months earlier in your fire pit. Although tempting, do not use plywood or any composite wood which could be toxic when burned. Do not ever use gasoline or lighter fluid in your fire pit.
Always keep watch of your fire. A responsible adult should always be supervising an open fire. Keep a close watch on children to make sure they do not get too close.
Most importantly, when you are finished with your fire pit fun for the night, make sure to put out the flames. Pour a bucket of sand or water over your fire.
