With tropical storms making landfall it’s important to be prepared. Tropical storms and hurricanes bring strong winds and rain that can cause heavy damage and flooding. Follow our tips to keep your family safe and prepared before and during a storm.
Create a Safety Kit
Experts say you should have enough water, food, and supplies for at least 72 hours. Listed below are basic items that you will need for your emergency kit-
• Flashlight
• Extra batteries
• List of emergency contact numbers
• Portable radio (hand-cranked or battery-powered)
• Non Perishable food and water
• Medications
• First aid kit
• Blankets
• Map of the area
• Pet food if needed
Figure Out Evacuation Route
Be sure you know your evacuation route. The National Weather Service recommends that you should create a plan of action and have your route mapped out ahead of time in case you must leave without much notice.
Prepare a Safe Room
If you have a basement, you need to go there right away. If not go to the lowest level of your home and get in a windowless interior room, such as a bathroom, closet, or inner hallway and stay away from windows. Get under a sturdy piece of furniture or a mattress. Make sure your emergency kit is with you.
Make Special Arrangements
Get out cash before the storm hits and fill up your gas tank to be prepared during a long power outage. Don’t forget about your pets. Your pets need your help and protection during storms also. Be sure your pet has some sort of identification on them in case you get separated during the storm. They should have a collar or microchip with your contact information on it. Keep your pet near. If you evacuate and you have a pet, look for pet-friendly hotels or safe kennels.
