Apartment Fire Safety

If you live in an apartment, you need to think and plan ahead in the case of a fire. Unfortunately, fires can spread very quickly in an apartment building so it is important to be aware of your surroundings. It is also very beneficial to work together with the people who live around you to ensure your safety.

Be Prepared

Learn your fire building evacuation plan. Every apartment should have one. If you do not, then you will need to create a plan for yourself. Practice your plan and know where all exits and stairs are located on your floor. Count the doors between your apartment and the nearest exit. Communicate to your neighbors so that you are all on the same page when it comes to fire safety. Establish a meeting place outside so you can account for everyone’s safety.

Ensure Apartment Building Safety

Make sure that your smoke alarms are working properly in your apartment. If they are not, speak to your landlord immediately. Do not prop doors open, closed doors can slow the spread of fire. Never clutter shared spaces with any items that can block pathways for you or others. Also, make sure that you have a working fire extinguisher in your building and that all emergency lights are working properly. Notify management if anything looks dangerous.

Don’t Panic

If your apartment building does have a fire than the best thing to do is stay calm. Call 911 right away. If you can escape safely according to your plan than do so. Always use the stairs, never use an elevator to escape from a fire. Stay outside and wait for the fire department. Do not go back into the building for any reason. If you can’t escape safely than notify responders of your location and wait by your window. Place rags or towels under your door.
