About Tacoma, WA
The third-largest city in Washington state, Tacoma was incorporated in 1875 as a port city on Puget Sound. Today, the population is approximately 219,205. Known locally as the “City of Destiny,” the name Tacoma was adopted for the original name of Mount Rainier.
Our city is home to the University of Washington Tacoma as well as the state’s highest density of art and history museums. Residents and visitors alike enjoy our restored urban waterfront, the Thea Foss Waterway, part of the revitalization of the downtown area that started in the 1990s.
