Water damage is no joke. It can wreak havoc on your entire home, causing you to have to do expensive replacements and repairs, and really putting a downer on your entire day. Dealing with water damaged walls is, thankfully, a bit easier than water damaged ceilings or floors. If you’re faced with water damaged walls, it’s usually best left to the professionals. However, if you have questions about repairing water damaged walls, these are generally the steps taken.
Addressing the Issue
The first thing you’ll want to do is turn the power off in the area surrounding your water damaged walls. Simply put, water and electricity don’t mix very well. Next, you’ll want to address the issue at its root: where is the water coming from? You may need to call a professional plumber or roofer depending on the source of your water damage. Check for broken pipes or damaged gutters to see if you can determine where all of that pesky water is coming from.
Taking Action
Once you’ve gotten the issue contained, it’s time to start getting involved. Remove any excess water from the area and, if possible, let as much of it naturally dry out as possible. You may need to bring in a mop and a bucket or an industrial sized fan, or simply call the help of a water damage specialist. After the area is as dry as you can get it, you’ll want to remove the damaged section of drywall and any insulation that got wet in the process. Cut into the wall in shapes that are easy to replace, like squares or rectangles.
Large Vs. Small Holes
Small holes can be repaired with a simple patch. You just need to sand the area and be sure there are no rough edges. Then, place some mesh tape over the hole, cover the tape with spackle, and smooth. Once it’s dry, you can sand it out until it’s smooth and then paint over it. Larger holes will require you to purchase large pieces of drywall. Cut the drywall to fit the hole and nail to the studs. After that, it’s the same deal: cover the edges with drywall tape and spackle, once the spackle is dry you can sand it out, and then you can give it a fresh coat of paint.
