You’re walking through your house one day, enjoying the soft cushion of carpet beneath your feet, when all of the sudden — squish. Your immediate reaction may be despair because your socks are wet and that’s the most uncomfortable thing on this planet, but you’ll soon realize that your wet socks are the least of your problems. Your carpet is soaked, and that probably means a bunch of costly repairs and the headache of undergoing those repairs. We hope to make it a little easier for you. Here’s what you need to do.
Dry That Carpet!
The quicker you get drying, the more likely it is that you can prevent structural damage and mold growth. Depending on how much water we’re dealing with here, start by laying towels down and stepping, pressing, or otherwise applying pressure to start soaking up excess water. If all that happened is a spilled glass of water, this may suffice in drying. If the situation is more dire than that, you may need to call in a professional.
Assess the Damage
There are two main factors here: the amount of water and the duration your carpet (and subfloors) were exposed to that water. If the amount of water is bordering on “a lot” and the duration of exposure is upwards of a few hours, you’re unfortunately most likely looking at some necessary fixin’. It may be the case that the padding is soaked, exposing the wood subfloor to continued moisture, and creating endless vulnerability to mold, mildew, and/or structural damage. That’s the extreme scenario, though. It could just be that you need a thorough and professional carpet cleaning. Luckily, we’re well-versed in professional carpet cleaning.
The final decision on how you deal with your carpet water damage, whether it’s a simple cleaning or a full-blown rip-up and replacement, will depend on the scope of your damage. Regardless, if it’s a cause for concern, it’s always better to err on the side of caution and give us a call for a damage assessment.
