Sewage Backup in Commercial Retail Building
ServiceMaster Dynamic Cleaning recently completed water damage restoration services for a Worcester County commercial property. The water damage was caused by a sewage backup in the employee restrooms. Category 3 black water spread from the back offices and breakroom out to the sales floor. The property managers called on our team for help and our crews were there within an hour to begin the emergency water damage cleanup.
Sewage is not only gross but also a health hazard and must be handled properly to avoid cross-contamination and sickness. Items that are porous like fabric or carpet are deemed contaminated and can not be restored. For this reason, they must be thrown away. Daily safety meetings were held to discuss the donning and removal of the technician's proper protective equipment (PPE) to avoid recontamination. Meetings were also held with the onsite property manager to review the day's plan and brief them on items for cleaning and disposal. Our project managers coordinate with all the various sub-trades like electrical, storage, disposal vendors, and environmental hygienists. All relevant parties were kept involved every step of the way.
Technicians extracted the standing sewage and then cleaned and sanitized the building's floors and lower walls. Crews evaluated the store's inventory to determine which products needed cleaning and which ones were to be disposed of. Once they were clean and decontaminated, the products were then packed, labeled, and moved to onsite storage units for the duration of the remediation.
Shelving and cabinets were dismantled to allow for drywall removal and floor cleaning under the displays. The team wrapped and covered the rest of the display shelves to protect them from construction dust.
