How to Prevent Spring Flooding

Be Prepared For Spring Flooding

With spring upon us, homeowners will begin to tackle spring cleaning projects. It is important to note that spring cleaning is not just for the indoors. Take this time to prepare your home for the frequent and heavy rains ahead by addressing these three areas.

  1. Inspect gutters and downspouts. Check for loose downspouts and sagging gutters. Tighten any loose gutter straps and reconnect any spout extensions that have come loose. Consider adding a screen to cover gutter spouts or gutter cap systems that help keep gutters and downspouts free-flowing.
  2. Regrade around the foundation, if needed. If water pools against the home's foundation, it's only a matter of time before water finds its way into the house. A small area should only need a vertical drop of about half an inch per foot. Once enough of the soil has been moved, tamp it down well to make sure it stays in place. Then add back covering mulch.
  3. Test sump pump. To test a sump pump, lift the float to simulate a full pit. The pump should start pumping out water. Install a battery-powered backup in case you lose power.

It is important to note that as a general rule, groundwater is not covered by your homeowner's insurance policy. Evaluate your needs to determine if adding flood insurance may be a good option for you. Keep in mind that flood insurance coverage typically begins 30 days after the date of purchase.

Hopefully, you'll never have to worry about excess rain. But if the water should begin to rise, contact us at (800) 865-5157 or click here
